Things that float have ‘buoyancy’
So we’re going to do a test to see,
What stays up and what goes down
Which things swim and which things drown!
Gathering your Materials:
Choose anything small enough to fit into the your container: ping pong balls, golf balls, blocks, kitchen gadgets, sponges, strainers, straws, stones, flowers, corks, confetti … anything mum and dad won’t mind getting wet.
Getting Started:
Pick a place with a waterproof floor. In fact, if it’s a nice day why not go outside? Then you can splash about to your heart’s content!
Fill the container almost to the top with clean water.
Now, take the things you’ve chosen one by one and guess whether it will sink or float.
Drop it in the water. Does it sink? Does it float? Who guessed right?
[tip]Children learn best by doing things themselves and they will really understand these concepts if they are allowed to try them out with real objects.[/tips]
