Layered liquids

What You'll Need

  • Water
  • A tall glass
  • Food dye
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Golden syrup
  • 45 mins
  • Ages 2 - 6
  • Inside
  • Very Messy
Some liquids sink while others float
But you really wouldn’t know...
So let’s make them different colours
Then the different layers will show!

Getting Started:

  • Put four tablespoons of water into the tall glass and add a few drops of food dye.
  • Now add four tablespoons of vegetable oil into the glass – just add it, don’t stir it or mix it.
  • Then add four tablespoons of golden syrup and watch what happens.

..and then

  • Now do it again, add four more tablespoons of water and dye, vegetable oil and golden syrup.
  • Now you can stir it all up ( I know you want to!). When you’re happy you’ve stirred it up thoroughly, leave it for five minutes.
  • What happens?

[tip]This is a handy experiment to help you see how different liquids behave when mixed and left to settle.[/tip]
