What You'll Need

  • Wax Crayon
  • PVA Glue
  • White Card
  • Newspaper
  • A hair dryer (do not touch the hair dryer without a grown-up with you)
  • 60 mins
  • Ages 4 - 7
  • Inside
  • Very Messy
Ice cream melts really fast
Chocolate’s a bit slower,
Let’s see how quickly other things melt
Using a hairdryer as a blower
  • Using the PVA glue, stick the wax crayons to the card, in a row
  • Now prop the card against a wall, taking care to put a piece of newspaper on the floor under it (this could get messy!)
  • When a grown-up says it’s OK, turn on the hair dryer and gently blow over the crayons, making sure to blow the same amount on them all.

Is somebody taking notes? Which one melts first? Do they all melt at the same speed? Do they change colour when they melt?

Another thing….

Try these melting experiments to turn various solids into liquids. This experiment shows you how some solid things become liquids when they get warmer. It also helps you find out which of the crayons melts more quickly.
