What You'll Need

  • An onion
  • A chopping board
  • A knife
  • 15 mins
  • Ages 6 - 8
  • Inside
  • A Little Messy
Activity
Even when I’m happy
Chopping onions makes me cry...
It doesn’t happen with carrots
And I’ve always wondered why?

Getting Started:

  • This is a good way to show children how to use a knife and chopping board properly. You simply peel, cut and chop an onion and show the children what happens.
  • After you’ve all described how the onion made you feel, talk about what was happening.
  • When you cut into the onion you are breaking its cells and releasing an oil called – wait for it – ‘syn-propanethial-S-oxide’ (even trying to say it is enough to make some people cry!).
  • Once this oil combines with the oxygen in the air to create a gas that irritates the back of your nose, making your eyes stream with tears.

Tips!

When you cut into the onion you are breaking its cells and releasing an oil called – wait for it – ‘syn-propanethial-S-oxide’ (even trying to say it is enough to make some people cry!).
